Diamine Oxidase is the body’s primary enzyme for breaking down ingested histamine and a natural defense against histamine excess.  If you ingest too much dietary histamine or produce more than you DAO level can handle, reactions can occur.  DAO is produced in the small intestine,  but certain drugs, foods, and bacteria may suppress it’s production. Low DAO levels are associated with the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Migraines , Headaches
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Hives, skin rash ,eczema, psoriasis
  • Nasal congestion, asthma
  • Gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome
  • Dysmenorrhea, PMS, estrogen dominance
  • Arrhythmia, hypertension, hypotension
  • Fibromyalgia, muscular pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • MS,ADD,ADHD
  • Depression and anxiety

Symptoms of low DAO are similar to those of histamine excess since it is DAO that breaks down and metabolizes the histamine.  Using DAO replacements and healing the gut can improve the symptoms associated with low DAO.  Since it is made in the GI tract, low levels are indicative of poor digestive function and compromised intestinal barrier.

You can now measure those DAO and Zonulin levels through an Advanced Intestinal Barrier Assessment.  If you have insurance (PPO) ,  your payment is $149 and your insurance will cover the remaining fee. Call Lotus Path wellness Center to order a kit or make an appointment to discuss your need  for  this test with Dr. Maria 813-964-0847. This could be the missing link to feeling better!
